Weekend Round-up: Now with Bacon!

Looking for the zaniest of bacon products this lovely spring weekend? We’ve got you covered, and then some. This year is even better than last. Let’s begin with our friends at Green Works, a product I personally use and love. (This is not a paid endorsement, I’m just a fan.) I didn’t think their cleaners could get more delightful, but oh how wrong I was.   Dammit all, I want to jump on a trampoline with a piglet. For more information, check out the Green Works blog. Big ups to reader Elizabeth for this one! Next we have a product for...

There Will Be Bacon

In case you were looking for something to do this weekend, and in case you happen to love motorcycles and bacon, we have an event for you! The First (and hopefully not last) Annual Bacon Run starts in San Diego and ends up right here in Santa Barbara’s backyard at the beautiful El Capitan campsite. If the Level 12 Biker Wizards are to be believed – and what could be more trustworthy than motorcycle nerds? - this event will have prizes, bacon, a jacuzzi, and biker dudes in skimpy thongs. Or something like that. I’ll probably have to go up there just to see...

The Price is…Bacon!

This absolutely blows my mind. My good friends Chrissy and Smiley went to a taping of The Price is Right for their 4-year anniversary, because they are awesome like that. To my utter delight, Smiley was picked and yes, he was wearing the Bacon Freak shirt he won at Bacon Day 2008. Because we all know that a great t-shirt is the way to get picked on The Price is Right, and what could make better TV than a pig and a pithy phrase about bacon? Drew, of course, had plenty to say about it and, well, I won’t give away the...

Naughty Little Brownie

Blogging is hard work, you know? Eating bacon. Writing about eating bacon. Thinking about eating and writing about bacon. It wears on a girl. We recently got a beautiful package in the mail from Leigh at Naughty Bits Brownies. And then we had to EAT BROWNIES. Geez. What more do you people want from us? And keep in mind that these were no ordinary brownies. These were Shiksa Bars, topped with maple-smoked bacon and bits of toffee. There was a lot of arm-twisting involved, but finally Naseem, Husband and I gathered round the table to fight over share these fudgy...

Scallops with Creamy Bacon Sauce

Okay, my husband is officially the best. He’s a diver and a spearfisherman, and I’m extremely fortunate to be the beneficiary of those skills. While he’s very selective and judicious about how much he takes, I have certainly had my fair share of seafood in 2011. Most recently, he brought home a beautiful haul of scallops. And you know what they say about the person who brings home the bacon… So last night he decided to make us a “light” supper of salad and (over-the-top, super rich) scallops with bacon cream sauce. Here is his recipe, as told to...

Bacon Meatballs

Last month I came up with this little recipe in order to participate in a Spaghetti Western fundraiser…you can’t do a pasta event without meatballs, right? Turns out, the meatballs were a hit and, since my husband missed that event, I decided to whip some more together yesterday. This time I had the foresight to take photos and share the recipe with you, the talented and wildly attractive interwebs.   Ingredients 1/2 pound each: bacon, ground beef, and ground turkey* 2 large eggs 1/2 c. bread crumbs 1 tsp. each: black pepper, cayenne, oregano, garlic powder *Any ground meats...

Is there such a thing as too much pork?

This weekend while the husband and I were biking around downtown, we decided to stop at Union Ale and grab a sandwich and a beer. Because, you know, casually rolling around in 75 degree weather is thirsty work. I meant to be good. I meant to get a salad or a wrap. Or maybe I’d go crazy and get a turkey club. Instead I got this. This is their pulled pork sandwich, which is decadent enough. But what takes this monster over the top are the three slices of thick-cut bacon. The pork was tender, the sauce was sweet and...

Cowboy Up

It’s that time of year again when RBS gets involved with a Genesis West fundraiser. This year, it’s a Spaghetti Western theme with a wide and weird variety of pastas, full-on barnyard atmosphere (live animals included), and a classic Western movie under the Santa Barbara stars. I’ll be on hand with my soon-to-be-famous bacon meatballs, and there’s a great raffle with lots of fun prizes. Saturday, September 10 – 5 to 9 pm Y’all come on...

Bacon Ice Cream on the Go

Santa Barbara has seen a rash of mobile food eateries pop up in the past year or so, as seen here in John Dickson’s Food Truck Guide. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest things that can happen to any city. I love street food vendors, and although we have city ordinances that keep them from remaining very stationary, at least we have twitter so we can find them on the move! I bring this up today because John just clued us in to a new artisan ice cream truck called Sugar & Salt Creamery. I’ve been...

Bay to Bacon 2011

I mentioned way back in October that Naseem and I were going to start doing some races under the moniker of Team Bacon. We started with 5K runs and…well, honestly that’s all I’ve really bothered to do over the past seven months. Until last weekend. On May 15 we officially took Team Bacon on the road to San Francisco and ran Bay to Breakers! And when I say we ran it, I mean we ran the entire 7.5+ miles. It took 81 minutes. Did everyone hear that? I ran for 81 minutes straight. Honestly, you could have knocked me...

Happy Cinco de Drinko! Con Tocino!

Leave it to Conan, THE MAN, to share with us yet another bacon bebida. Sweet Conan, I’m so on your team. Lots of interesting looking stuff, but the bacon talk starts around 6:10. Wait for it… “Wait, so this is just bacon, syrup and tequila??” Yes Andy. That’s how the bacon nation rolls....
