Want the great taste of bacon in your recipes, but don’t want to deal with the greasy mess of frying actual bacon? Well Minor’s has just the thing for you! This Nestle affiliate has created Bacon Base, a “savory bacon paste made with USDA inspected bacon and ham.” So I’m guessing this is something akin to bacon bouillon cubes, only it comes in a tub. And is a paste. Yikes.

If you go to the Amazon link and check out the product description, it calls this paste “Southern-style seasoning.” I know they like to use bacon in the South, but this isn’t really what comes to mind when I think “Southern-style.” I think Cajun spices. I think gumbo and crawfish and just about anything deep-fried. I think of Paula Deen using a whole pound of butter to make grits, but not so much bacon paste.

However, there is one review on Amazon, and the reviewer said the product is great for gravy, gumbo and green beans, so what do I know? Maybe bacon base is hiding in the depths of every Southern dish I’ve ever had, inconspicuously providing the salty goodness I crave. Maybe this is the secret to great cooking and I’ve been missing out all this time. Honestly, I think I’d rather let this continue to be one of life’s great mysteries.

  • I am looking for the best bacon base. I just used the last of my Yorkmont Valley and cannot find a replacement. I have tried ham base and it just doesn’t have enough smoke.

I don’t know about the BEST bacon bases, but here’s one I found online: this one and Nestle makes one, but I’m not sure where you can actually buy it. Tough market.

This recipe doesn’t use bacon base, but it’s a bacon-lovers dream snack.
    Spice Bacon Twists
1 cup pack light brown sugar
    2 Tbsp. Dry mustard
    1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
    1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
    1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 lb. Sliced bacon (not thick cut)
Directions. Pre-heat oven to 350º. Line baking sheet with foil and set a wire rack over the foil. Use baking sheet that has sides to catch grease. In small bowl stir all dry ingredients together. Press bacon slices into mixture until coated. Twist each strip a few times and place on baking rack. Bake until browned and crisp enough to hold its shape. About 30 minutes. Tip: cut bacon strips in ½ for more servings. Put all of the spice/sugar mixture into plastic bag and toss bacon in bag to coat. Yum

Minors Bacon Base is the best thing ever. Unfortunately when I tried to order it in November from Soupbase.com I was sadly informed that Nestle is no longer producing it. I literally cried. I have a soup business in Mexico and many of my soups like Cauliflower Goat Cheese and Bacon require the bacon base. I’m down to my last container and am panicked. Nestle….you are mean!!!
