Okay baconeers, here’s something I’m really excited about. I may have mentioned before that I like heavy beers like Guinness and double black or chocolate stouts. Although you can’t drink a lot of it, I love the depth of flavors and the heartiness; they make me think of good bread or dark chocolate or rich coffee. That’s right. I like beer that doesn’t remind me of beer. So when I heard that Rogue had created a new beer in tribute to Voodoo Doughnuts and the Bacon Maple Bar, well…they had me at Voodoo. My husband is a huge Rogue fan, and I’ve just joined that bandwagon.

I’m sorry to say that I haven’t actually found a bottle in my local pub or liquor store yet, but while I was keeping a lookout, Paste Magazine was posting a nice review ย that definitely has me anxious to try it. The smoked malts and applewood smoked bacon are highly intriguing. Check out the comments of those who’ve had the pleasure of tasting the new wonder. I will say that upon seeing the photo, my first thought was of Pepto Bismol. I think maybe they were going for pig colored? Or doughnut frosting? I don’t know, but I’m going to need to drink this beer out of a mug, not the reminiscent bottle. If you’re one of the lucky folks who’ve sampled this ale, leave a comment and let us know what you thought! I’ll be sure to report back as soon as I find a 22 of my own.

I found this at my local liquor emporium a while back and, obviously, nearly tripped over myself on my way to the checkouts at Maximum Warp. I haven’t been able to bring myself to try it yet – it seems like bacon beer should be the ultimate special occasion beverage.

Your restraint is admirable, but ill-advised. I urge you to open that beer now and tell me how it tastes! Do it for the Society!

I have had the opportunity to try this beer. I LOVE beer and bacon, so why shouldn’t this be the best beer ever made. Unfortunatly, I was a little dissapointed. There was a good maple flavor which I liked. However, the bacon wasn’t what I was hoping for. I think they are trying to pass off a smoke flavor for bacon which let me down. I love Rogue, but I think this one missed the mark.

That is a mistake that most companies make when trying to create a bacon flavor. Bummer. I’m still going to give it a go, but I’ll approach it with more skepticism. Maybe it will help balance out my expectations. Thanks Wayne!

I actually really want to try this, but I live in a small town and unfortunately it is no where to be found. Will probably have to order it. But while we are on the subject of bacon, I just wanted to share with any bacon enthusiast this campaign called BACON2012…. for the American Bacon Enthusiast who needs a 3 minute break from the current political onslaught. Check out the video here and enjoy (I promise this is not spam) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=b6BjkMralRk

Okay, not only is that video very funny, but it also ends with a Parry Gripp song. And RBS loves Parry Gripp. I think this deserves front page coverage. Thanks Megan!

I’m a HUGE Rogue fan and (do I even have to say it?) love bacon too. The Voodoo Maple Bacon bar is one of the best inventions of mankind in the past 50 years and I never miss an opportunity to get some when I visit Portland.

That said, as soon as I heard about this beer, I ordered up a few bottles. Once they’d arrived and been properly chilled, I eagerly popped the top off of one, poured a nice frothy mug, and took a sip… And almost spit it out. :-/ Sadly, as Wayne mentioned, smoke was most prevalent and maple almost nowhere to be found. Overall, it seems like it started as a decent stout that took a hard right into Wrongsville somewhere along the way. Since then, I’ve heard that it does pair well with a Maple Bacon Bar, but I haven’t tried it yet. Maybe soon?

what a disappointment! i still haven’t found the beer in santa barbara…i must be looking in the wrong places.

I bought some a few months ago and was also somewhat disappointed. It’s a good beer, but it’s lurking behind an almost cloying sweetness. I needed a few friends to help me drink a 22oz bottle which I had intended to keep to myself. I probably won’t buy it in the future, but want to add that I enjoy many other Rogue beers regularly, and have never had a bad beer from Rogue, just beers that weren’t for me.
